My children and I headed to the country this week to stay with my Papa. He is alone, since my Granny died 3 months ago, and in need of company. When I arrived last week we were talking through some things he wanted help with during my visit and I was thrilled to find out that he had saved the “perfect” job for me. He assigned me the job of cooking and eating up everything in the pantry that he didn’t know what to do with. My Papa is not a cook, so that’s pretty much everything except chips and cookies. Perfect right? I can cook for sure and I brought five kids that love to eat!
There was only one problem….or two…or three….in the form of GMO’s, pesticides, herbicides, nitrates, BPA, food dye, artificial flavors, preservatives, refined sugar, corn syrup and on and on and on…..
My Granny, although she cooked three meals a day was not the kind of cook I am. Where my produce drawer is overflowing, her solution for veggies was to open a can. She couldn’t make anything without a recipe, even if she had prepared that same dish 100 times. I cannot follow a recipe to save my life. She worked very hard to stay healthy and keep her family healthy, it is simply a matter of generational difference. She was homemaking in her prime with the new found convenience of boxed meals, veggies from a can and jello salads!
Here’s a peek at what I was up against…..
So what’s a good Grandaughter to do?
I pulled out the can opener, tore open the boxes, prayed over the ingredients and served a salad with every meal.
My kids have eaten things they have never even dreamed that mommy would give them. They didn’t even know they existed to dream of them! I wish I had a video of their questions regarding canned fruit. I was giggling like crazy! They were so confused as to why the fruit would be in a can!
And one of my all time don’t feed my kids……HOT.DOGS……or as I like to call them “Nitrate Sticks”….yea my Great Aunt (who lives 2 doors down) served us those for lunch. She has only entertained NEVER in the last several years. It took her two days to gear up for our gourmet meal of dogs and Fritoes (which my kids have never had) and by golly we sat, smiled, ate and enjoyed! She was beaming with pride!
I still believe all the same things I did about healthy food, but sometimes making someone you love happy overrides pesticide consumption.
I drew the line at the Spam though …..
From the Country,
PS – Did I mention that my Papa has dessert after every lunch and dinner? Yup….every one. Of course we don’t want him to have to eat alone In fact, yesterday he said my lunch was so good it was a “Two-Cookie Lunch!”
